Can you do board and batten on textured walls?

It can surely be done. Knock down the high points on the plaster so it is fairly level. You can chip it off with a chisel or sand, etc. You don't want any bulges that kick the board and batten out of plumb/level or make it wavy.

Then attach your wall with with liquid nails and some small nails.

I placed wainscoting on such s wall im s bedroom and hallway. I have seen printed s procedure by people who wet these walls and scrspe off the finish down to the naked wallboard.

You are referring to "orange peel" texture, least that is what they call it here. Some use drywall one use plywood. Check out these links and see what you think.

If the texture isn't that pronounced. Just put the board and batten on making sure it's as plumb as possible. Fill gaps with a bead of paintable caulk and smooth out with a wet finger. If the texture is really rough you will need to scrape it off where you want to place the board and batten.

Thanks for all your input everyone. I can see that my wall would be too rough to do it the easy way, and I will have to do the "real" board and batten after all. I would never be happy with it if it didn't look just right...you know how it is . Cheers and thanks again.
