Let me start by saying that the only thing wrong with our ceilings was they were all still clad with popcorn. Well, I fixed that in 1 day. Yep, easy as eating pie. Right? Wrong and oh how wrong we were!
old kitchen / dining
I apologize that I do not have a pic of the popcorn.  ( like it would be any different from any other popcorn ceiling anyway.).  I scraped both kitchen and dining room in one day.  The old fashioned way too.  Squirt bottle, scraper, and an old cookie baking sheet.  This is, for me, the easiest way to keep the mess down to a minimum.
See all the lights, that were not there?
Now for the adventure!  Ready, GO!  Now my hubby has been a master electrician since, that's all he's ever done really.  He has walked 3,000 miles in attics over his career at minimum.  All without incident too!

If you look just above the lamp on the left there, THAT is where he went through to the kitchen.  The first time!
in process of ship lapping.
And there just at the edge of the installed lap, is where he came through the second time!  It was really hard to get a pic, never occurred to me to, while I was trying to keep the drywall intact as much as possible AND help him get his leg back on the other side of the ceiling.   (A few choice words flew from the attic those 2 days.)  Schewwww,  Heaven help us both!
We were kind enough to let Lowes make all our cuts, 6",  to the luan for us.  Cause this girl did not want to mess with it cause I just didn't want to!  I had things to do.  View from Kitchen to dining room.  Just love that dining room light, don't you!

This is the final coat of paint and I can pull tape.
With an air nailer, liquid nails, and scaffolding, (on wheels) this was done.  Drywall work above your head is not gonna happen by me.  So ship lap to the rescue!  I bought my nailer at a local pawn shop and have been using it for 4 years now.  It worked at the store perfect and I have no regrets.
it's all did!
And to the finish line!  Time to make vacation arrangements cause I need and deserve at least Paris and the most, Greece, right!?!

Looks great, had to laugh at your "Dining room" lights comment. Reminded me of Great Grandmothers old house, it only had ceramic light fixtures with a bare bulb in them and a string to turn them off and on. Thanx for the memory.
