My bed was in major need of something above to warm it up. Not being one who especially loves headboards, I decided to spruce up Ikea shelves that were on sale, with some yummy looking yarn.
Step 1: Assemble your Ikea shelves
This includes following packaging instructions :) Extra points if you find your shelf on sale.
Step 2: Give those boring shelves a splash of paint
I didn't like the plain wood color so I gave the shelves a couple coats of white paint. Nothing too fancy, since they were mostly going to be covered in yarn anyway.
Step 3: Gather your yarn
I liked these warm light gray and navy colors. They complimented my bedding (for the most part)
Step 4: Time to get knotty
I decided on an about length I wanted the string to be. This involved getting above my bed and measuring how long the string should hang above my head. Then I simply cut lots and lots of pieces of yarn and knotted them around the bar, making sure the knot was hidden behind.
Step 5: Mix it up!
To give the yarn a bit of character I threw some braids in there and tied different colored string.
Tie and knot and tie and knot until you're done.
Step 6: Repeat
One shelf was two small, so I repeated the same pattern on a second shelf.
Step 7: Cut it out
The yarn at this point was not even at all. I decided on a pattern I wanted (in my case an inverted V) and used some fabric scissors to carefully even out the string
Chomp chomp chomp
Step 8: Ready to hang!
Once I saw that the string was even, I got my power tools out and hung up the shelves above my bed
Step 9: Fill your shelves and enjoy!
This simple DIY was really easy to do and I love the way it warms up my bed icon
Yarn art is great because all it requires is a bit of patience, a lot of tying, and creativity to create a pattern you'll love. You can't go wrong!
