There are so many varieties of tables. Basically you have to choose the type of wood you want and that would mean Pine, Ash, Oak ect. Then you need to know what size of table you want, what type of table do you want. (block table, laminate table,), round or Square or rectangular etc. Next you need to decide what type of legs you want do you want a metal frame or do you want a wood frame? Do you want an A-frame table? There are so many different types of tabletops as well as the framing beneath them.
My suggestion would be to research what type of table you are really looking for and what size you were looking for. Look at all of the variables and decide on something and then go about researching exactly how to DIY exactly what you want.

Unless you are dead set on making one, just go to a thrift store and get a good one really cheap. There are always many tables and chairs on sale. A lot of people no longer want dining sets and they end up in thrift stores taking up a lot of space. Good luck!
