  • What specifically do you want to grow?

The fruit you eat is generally hybrid, a cross between several different varieties. So the children, (fruit pits) can take after ancestors and not be as good. The only real choice is to go to a local nursery and buy the small trees that work locally.

I don't actually know the answer to your question but I know that the USDA extension agent in your area will know. The USDA has extension agents whose whole job is to help gardeners, home-owners, farmers, and ranchers deal with pests, plant the best varieties for their area, use best practices in famrs and gardens, and keep trees healthy. They are a wonderful and underused resource. Here is a service center locator map. Click on Texas then your particular county.
