Hi Peggy, Fill your feeder with bird seeds and hang it outside. The birds will find it on their own. I hang finch socks right outside my picture window. I watch the finches feeding. It's awesome and it seems like there's more and more finches every year.

Try different seed and spread some around on the ground. Also try different feeders. Perches that are too small won't be attractive to larger birds (cardinals, grosbeaks', jays) but smaller birds (finches, chickadees) will be. Suet is a good source of protein, in winter birds need more for energy. BTW, Don't stop feeding in winter!

More feeders in a variety of styles and sizes might help too. Be sure to clean feeders often and use fresh seeds. They can grow mold and make birds sick.

Black sunflower seeds are pretty much the most popular for all kinds of birds.

suet is great year round (shop around - you can find blocks for $.99 and they last for several weeks) I put seed in different parts of my yard AND in feeders - BIRDS BIRDS BIRDS! you need to cater to different kinds - ground feeders, platform feeders and larger birds. good luck - LOVE birds!
