Any ideas on what to put on the wall of a U-shaped stairwell?

I have a U-shaped stairwell in the entrance of my home. It's a tight space for carrying bigger items up and down the stairs and hard to avoid getting scrapes and dents on the painted walls. They are very noticeable and not very attractive in my entrance.

Have you considered fabric? quilts, rugs, fabric murals? A curved curtain rod ?
Tapestries, macrame items, unbreakable items, if you are worried about knocking them off.
Wood flooring planks they have multiple colors light to dark. Ship lap.
