Is there such a thing as a noise-proof fence?

We have new neighbours in the back ~ they put in an above-ground pool, built a deck around it ~ they had a crowd there e.v.e.r.y. weekend last summer ~ we weren't able to tolerate the noise so stayed inside... Is there anything we can do to make our own deck and yard enjoyable to use? Something not criminal...! Anxious to see your ideas ~ thanks!

My oh my oh my! Janet, you handed us the 'jackpot'! There are a lot of solutions to our noise issue but we'll have to do some research to check plausibility as well as costs. Possibilities DO exist! Thanks so much for passing along that information, including all the bonus ideas and solutions to other problems related to the outdoors. Excuse me saying "yum" ~ it's all pretty incredible!

Thr first thing I would do is talk with your neighbors. Maybe take some fresh flowers as a "welcoming gift" since they are new to the neighborhood. Bring up your concern and you never know, you might be invited to join their get togethers!

Thanks for taking the time to reply ~ I suppose a visit and a chat is in order if only to remind them of how loud they are. As for an invitation to join them --- not happening. They really ARE too loud - thankfully without swearing or rudeness. sigh.

Evergreens and other natural noise absorbers would be best.

I think so too. The bushier and taller the better. Can't convince my husband, though. Maybe we'll go over and suggest a partnership in planting a jungle! Appreciate your response, Maureen.

I don't think there really is anyway to not hear it. Our backyard neighbors have an above ground pool and you can hear everything despite a really tall fence. Their kids are now grownup and graduated or going to college, so it is rarely used now. They tried to keep it down, but it echoes off everything and they apologized many times. We just took it as part of being in a neighborhood and enjoyed the happy sounds coming from the kids.

Introduce yourself. Invite them over for a backyard party and they'll do the same. That's what being in a neighborhood is all about. Otherwise, look elsewhere for a home.
