What is the secret to growing delicous sweet strawberrries?

They start off perky and continue to fill out and then the berries lay on the soil and rot or are eaten by squirrels. This year they have remained green thru the cold and snow - will these come back strong - do I remove them and start with fresh ones again - which is the best choice for an average gardener with a very small plot of land and just enough daily sun - how can I grow my favorite fruit?
Thank you for your help.

Marlene I've been growing strawberries for 15 years, it's a small plot of land next to the pool, maybe 2 feet wide by 6 feet long.

Every Spring I clean up the bed of winter debris and I remove any dead or diseased looking leaves. I buy some straw and break it up into small pieces then I hand place the straw mulch around each individual plant.

It's easy to do while the plant is small, when the berries arrive they will rest on top of the straw mulch and stay dry and clean.

You might have to add some more mulch as the plant gets bigger and those strawberries start growing and getting heavy.

Strawberries love to spread, mine have crept their way into

the vegetable garden and beyond. All I do is pull each runner with the root and replant it either back into the bed or in a pot or I give away a lot of baby plants too. My berries range from small to extra large and they are

    sooo delicious!

My Grandkids eat them so fast, none of them ever make it inside...lol

Lots of sun and water!! Keep the area weeded, and use mulch. If the birds or other critters are eating them, use a bird mesh you can buy at a plant nursery.
