HELP me design and furnish this long living room!

Where to put the tv? What furniture to buy? Room is 17 x 24
I would hire a decorator to help you with creating a plan based on your taste. Some better furniture stores have decorators they work with. or try Angie's List or Houzz.com. If you want to do it on the cheap, contact a local college Interior Design program and request the professor refer a couple of his senior design students to you to use for their final design project.

If this is a formal living room, find another room for the TV. I design stage sets for theatrical plays that usually take place in a house. I go through magazines and find an inspirational photo. The photo usually apeaels to my sense of style and color preference. I refer to the photo when purchasing similar furnitire, light fixtures and accessories. Your living room can afford a couple different conversation areas, the primary one should use the fire place as the focal point. Find a photogragh or two that reflect your style and taste, featuring a fire place. Good luck.
My living room is rather large like your's but I only have 1 set of double doors to the dining room that are in the middle of the wall like your 1st picture. You did not show where your front door is. You also have more windows. I have two tall wing chairs, one on each side of the fireplace. A book case is behind the wing chair on the right of the fire place. There is a white rectangular cube along side that wing chair. Because I do not have a front coat closet I added a white bench and a white mirrored shelf w/coat hooks just inside the (right) front door. I would definitely have an area rug. Depending on what furniture you have you can either float the sofa and end tables and use the electrical receptacles already in place for lamp tables. OR--- my navy sofa is on the back wall directly in front of the fire place with white cottage end tables on each side w/blue/white porcelain lamps and an accent chair is on the left side of the sofa facing the fire place. There is an over sized round coffee table in front of the sofa and room for foot traffic through the room to the hall and kitchen. I have a tall cherry double door entertainment center (that I store extra bed linen in) that would be cornered where your double doors are in the first picture that would need to be situated else where. I have no TV in the LR as I use my sun room for TV viewing. If you want the TV in the LR I would put it w/the table between the windows in the 3rd picture but ultimately you will need to choose your focal point. The TV could be viewed better or by more family if it was over the mantle. I had a white marble surround and hearth put on my fire place. I love white louvered shutters for a cottage affect. I use blue/white plates, sofa pillows and throw. I have a large tapestry (of the open doors to a garden) over the sofa. There is a large piece of decorative sorocco w/ a little mirror in the center and molded fleur de le ?? on each side over the fire place. My walls are painted a gray that is called soft leather and all my wood trim is painted decorator white. You may have separate areas for different tasks, bill paying, computer work. It is your home---make it your own and enjoy it. I used what I had and have added pieces for an eclectic look. Move furnishings around until you are happy w/your arrangement. Happy decorating!
Create two conversation areas, anchored in the middle with a large and interesting low table. Identical area rugs under each arrangement (as opposed to one in the middle) will also work to bring it together.
Another concept is to measure 10-12 ft into the room and extend a sofa into the room to divide the space. Use one end for a customary living room and create a cozy conversation nook on the short end. Try to include a window on the short end. Use a couple of comfortable Queen Ann chairs and a table and with a variety of live plants placed at different heights to fill in space. Use complementary colors and an area rug in the "nook" to keep it working with the living room and be sure to place 2-3 plants in the living room as well. the possibilities are endless!
