When I am refinishing old dressers with holes that I don't plan on using, I fill them all in with wood filler while I'm stripping/sanding the piece..... then when I'm ready to pick hardware.... I can drill new holes to match perfectly.

i had a similar problem with cabinets. Filling and finishing seemed like a lot of work and I could still see evidence of the old hole even with careful sanding and refinishing. Found inexpensive “ back plates “ from hardware for less and voila! It look beautful and holes are well hidden. Try it!
