From experience I can tell you it is easier to paint one if it is taken down and painted. If that isn't a good method for you, it can be painted hanging, but, you have to watch for drips because they are a pain to sand out. Scrub it really well before painting with a magic eraser and cleaner. Sand it lightly, wipe it down and then paint with a small roller.

Hi Boni, They actually make a paint for this exact purpose. I know because I had to paint our front door at our old house. I think it was a Rustoleum product. I chose red burgundy. But there were many more colors to pick from. I purchased it at Home Depot.

Rustoleum products are the way to go, they have many colors and even textures to choose from. Taking it down and using the spray cans will give you the best surface because you can do thin multiple coats with out brush or roller marks or drips. Just follow the directions on how to prep and how long to wait between coats. Go by the temperature guidelines so that you assure the best results. Good luck on getting your door repainted the way you want it. We covered the windows with paper shaped and sized slightly smaller and painters tape only on the window to hold it on and it worked perfectly.

A metal paint (rustoleum really is great stuff) should do the job. I think it will definitely be easier for you to remove the door for this paint job
