I adore farmhouse style, want to add a shiplap wall in living room, husband wants to install tongue/groove knotty pine 3ft high around the room.
How do I merge the styles?

Paint or stain them the same color. Let the knotty part of the pine leak through the paint.

dont really know if they can be merged, but a compromise may just be a shiplap wainscot

Big problem! Horizontal Shiplap and vertical wainscotting in the same room sounds busy. Do you think the two of you could agree to shiplap the living room and use his tongue and groove idea in another room, such as your dining room? Then you could paint or whitewash them the same color to disguise the incongruity.

A knotty pine ceiling and white shiplap wall will look lovely together
