Ah, O.K., that explains the metal. As the 'door' openings to the fuses are off-centre, it makes sense to me to cover up the whole wall rather that just that portion where the doors are, as this will further draw attention to the fact that they are not centred.
I would suggest mounting a tension rod the full width from wall to wall. From the rod, hang fabric of your choice to make the area more attractive. To help keep the fabric hanging straight down, slip small drapery weights into the hem of the fabric.
If possible you also might consider replacing the ceiling light fixture with one that is more attractive.
