Plant VERY shallow, with half the "root' aboveground. The soil may be too rich. Also be sure they're getting enough water, though if you're getting foliage that shouldn't be a problem.

There are many types of iris. The lighter color wide leaf type is probably what you have in Arizona. They like it drier and the sunny heat. The skinny leaf type loves moisture. The irises come up, do not boom yet. I would guess in AZ they would bloom around April. They are very hardy, need very little water, like well drained soils. There are about 100 varieties. Many hybrids, colors. I dug up 24 bags from our new house and replanted them in our field and around various stops in the yard with full sun. They are all green, no buds yet. Your patience will be rewarded! They need to be dug up and separated about every 5 years. They multiply, so you will have a lot. Enjoy!

The tubers of iris need to be at the surface barely covered with a thin dusting of soil.

You are welcome. If they bloom for a couple of years and then stop you will need to divide them. They do better when not crowded.
