Popcorn ceiling remodel

Does anyone have an alternative solution to removing popcorn ceilings? We fear asbestos may be in the ceiling and would prefer to not disturb it. We are going to sell the house soon.

My contractor suggested using 1x4 firing strips secured to the existing ceiling and going over it with either wall board or beadboard paneling.

When was your house built? The newer houses after 1980s shouldn’t have asbestos.

We are doing beadboard over the top of ours.

First, was the house built after 1980? If so you don't need to worry because asbestos in popcorn ceilings was no longer used after that date.

If you suspect asbestos, anything you do the attach something else to the ceiling will disturb the asbestos and send fibers into the air.

Before you proceed, check with a local asbestos removal company. You may be surprised at the affordability! We had all of our heating asbestos removed for $700 and they dealt with the disposal which requires a permit and license.

Do not remove it but encapsulate it by painting it with a paint sprayer. Painting asbestos is an accepted way of encapsulating it.
