Growing sweet peas from seed can be a challenge at times. Often the seed coat is so hard the seed doesn't germinate. Today I will go over some easy ways to help you.
Everyone wants to have sweet peas like this in the garden. Sweet peas like a sunny spot in the garden and must have some means of support. Grow them using a wire fence, garden trellis or stakes for support. Each plant has stems that cling for support.
Sweet pea seeds have a hard seed coat and benefit from soaking in water overnight to soften the seed. Notice the thin white line on the seed. This is where the first growth will emerge.
I am growing Sweet Pea 'Electric Blue' this week. It grows to about 3'-4' high and is suitable for containers. You will need some kind of support in your container for the vines to cling to.
I took my sweet pea seeds and placed them inside a moist paper towel and popped them in a resealable plastic bag. In two days I checked on the seeds and they have started to germinate. It's time to get these seeds planted up.
I used seed starter mix and planted my seeds in tall narrow sections of a plant pot with six sections. By separating the seeds into separate areas, it will be easier to pop the plants out when its time to transplant them outside. Sweet peas do not like root disturbance. After all we want to have all our seeds germinate so we have a great display in the garden. There is nothing more fragrant than a bouquet of sweet peas. Whether you grow them from seed or buy seedlings at the garden centre, your garden will be beautiful.
