Hi Carol, Here's a how to video. She's refinishing a desk, but the principles are the same: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nTIpqUaYvTw

As with painting any piece of furniture or kitchen cabinets. Lightly sand to remove any gloss and roughen the surface for paint. Prime with a good stain blocking primer like Kilz or BIN. Then paint with your color. Use a foam roller and foam brush for a smooth finish.

Dark stain requires primer first, even with chalk paint (I have found this out the hard way - it will bleed through). After you use Kilz primer, you can chalk paint the piece. My go-to chalk paint is from Waverly and sold at Walmart for $6 a bottle. Great stuff and usually one bottle is enough (depending on the project). Make sure the surface is clean and dry. Apply a light coat of paint (no sanding or priming is usually required). Let dry, lightly sand with high grit sand paper by hand, apply another coat of paint. And repeat until you reach the desired amount of paint. For a distressed look, you can lightly sand again before applying a sealer, paying special attention to the edges and corners of the pieces, where natural wear would happen. Then, I used a light top coat to seal of water based polycrylic (MinWax in the blue can is my fav).
