What flowers grow in a shady yard

Have had a terrible time getting plants established, much less flourish. Outside of hosta and ivy, little has survived. Is there anything that flowers that thrives in shade?

ferns are great- and I had found a number of plants last year at my local green house and walmart that have thrived in the shade. most are small flowers or colored foliage. I have yet to find any big bright bloomers that thrive in the shade.

Bleeding hearts and Astilbe are beautiful perennials. Impatiens are low flowering annuals that you can add every late spring. Good luck!

Thank you all. I think I may have a soil issue. My ferns have not survived, my bleeding hearts survived two years and the astilbe never broke above ground. I will test the soil and give impatiens a go. Perhaps it's time to plant more hosta.
