How to remove finish called Roxotone

Recently inherited a cedar chest that has been painted over with roxotone. The inside is beautiful cedar and would like to refinish the outside. It is chipped and incredibly hard finish.

I would attack that with an electric orbital sander starting with 80 grit sand paper

I agree with GandmasHouseDIY. Roxotone was a mineral speckled paint used in coating car trunks engine compartments, firewalls, in the 50's, 60's,70's made in Canada. You could tell an American car made in Canada by the Roxotone paint. It was very durable, weatherproof, and heat resistant. It was also used in commercial and industrial applications on walls and floors. It's still made by another comapny but the quality isn't equal to the original.

I'd use the sander as recommended but try a citrus based paint stripper first. Messier, true, but may be less work and less damage to the wood by the time you get it cleaned up and ready for a new finish.

Try sanding it off with a palm sander.
