Need ideas for nesting tables

I just picked up these cute nesting tables at a garage sale. I have some Annie Sloan Chateau Grey chalk paint I would like try on this project but I'm at a loss on what to do with the tops of the tables. Any ideas?
Are the tops old leather? I would strip that off and sand well them use some really cool stencils on the tops.
Scrape off the old leather (it is not salvageble), then paint it or try to sand down the top and stain it, while sanding the sides and legs.

you could strip the tops to bare wood, stain dark....add a stencilled design if desired (either the one that look s like a old label or any one that has a size that will fit each of the tops)...add dark Glaze or wax to the legs to highlight details and blend with the top
This is a leather top table. But they appear to be beyond repair, if you wanted to restore them. You can purchase leather to re-top this type of table. (over the internet). May cost more than you want since these do not appear to be antique.
