Painting Formica kitchen counter and cabinets

I am planning to update cabinets and countertops that are Formica. can I use an oil based primer (kilz) and then paint with floor paint? I want o make it the most durable. Any advice?

Just my opinion, but I don't think that oil-based is best over a plastic-type material. Whatever you use, make sure you rough-up the surface before adding the primer. Even if you use primer, if the surface is really smooth, it will be more difficult to paint evenly.
