Knockout roses are some of my favorite summertime preformers.

In pots/ planters I like to use the soil moist granules that help keep plantings going on not dty sunny days my favorites are wave petunias and begonias

annuals that do not need dead heading, wand flower, callicopra, cuphera, incorporate purple cordyline for additional color and sweet potato vine...As for perennials, most need dead heading for continual bloom. You could use annual purple fountain grass for additional color along with Hibiscus, and Mandevilla vine, these are annuals that basically just need water and fertilizer every few weeks.I also incorporate Tropicals like Croton which give a tremendous amount of color for the summer

Why don't you have all foliage plants this year (Green Red Grey Yellow and mixed colours on leaves) and most will give you flowers too.
