Hi Rose, have you tried taking the trap off and cleaning it out fully?

I had a musty smell coming from my sink. Discovered it was the rubber flap that keeps food from splashing up when using the garbage disposal. It gets moldy. I now wipe it down about once a week. Seems to have solved my problem.

After cleaning out the trap. Use lemon juice

I'd have to ask two things that are missing here.

Is the drain vent working properly or when you let a sink full of water go or flush a toilet does the drain sometimes make a "glug, glug" sound?

Do you have a garbage disposal?

      Hi Ken,

I don't have a garbage disposal. I am not sure what a drain vent is but when water goes down it doesn't make any real noise. I am in the country and on a well.

      Thanks :)

Use Sani drain sticks. Can buy from Amazon. In Canada, Cdn Tire. Give drain a good cleaning first and then use a new stick once a month. Works great! We use them and never a problem again.

It might be the garbage disposal. Take the rubber thing out and scrub it really good. You will be shocked to see how much stuff gets stuck in the rubber edge. Pretty gross

If cleaning the drains hasn't worked and the smell keeps coming back then the P trap is losing water. It's made to hold water to keep sewer gases from entering the home. It's possible the roof vent is clogged/blocked and when using the sink the water is being sucked out of the P trap.

Pour a little bleach & the clean smell will last for a couple of weeks. Then add a little more. But only a couple of tablespoons at a time.

You could try baking soda in the drains( I always do both) and get some vinegar almost to the boiling point, and have a large pan of boiling water. I pour the vinegar alternately in the sinks and when it's done fizzing I pour the water down the drains and it seems to rid the sink of odors.
