How do I prep a rough stucco wall to put shiplap over it?

My screened in porch was an afterthought. The walls are the exterior of the house. How do I “cover” them? Do they need to be sanded smooth first? I’m open to other materials & solutions as well!
2 full stucco walls and 2 half stucco walls.

You find your wall studs and nail the boards to the studs with a nail gun. Walls do not have to be smooth. But since it is an outdoor space, I would think twice about putting shiplap or any type of wood that could warp.

I would put furring strips or nailers as they are sometimes called up first. Then attach the shiplap to these. Paint the wall the same color as your shiplap, to hide any seams.

Yes, What they said! Furring out and paint!

IF YOU SCREW 1x3 OR 1x4'S TO THE WALL FIRST FOR THE BOARDS TO BE FASTENED TO YOU WILL HAVE A SOLID PROJECT. USE A STUD FINDER TO FIND THE ORIGINAL STUDS TO FASTEN THE STRAPPING TO.

Use an out door product such as cedar plank siding instead of shiplap or a cement siding... you may have to put up "furring strips" first to attach the siding to ... then follow the instructions for the siding

Have you considered vinyl siding or an outdoor type siding? You would have to put up furring strips.

We had cedar shaker shingles on our house when we bought it and they did not hold up very well, plus a fire hazard. Replaced them with vinyl siding.

You can use Hardiboard, and paint it whatever color you want to. Plywood, oriented strand board (OSB), cement board, and exterior grade gypsum sheathing. Make sure to follow local building codes while installing the sheathing material.
