How to remove "popcorn" ceiling that's been painted over?

I painted the ceiling to keep the popcorn from falling when touched. We did a little remodeling in the bathroom and since there is a mess anyway I want to get rid of the ceiling.

If the ceiling was put up after 1977 you are in no danger. It was banned after that. That said, you can remove it pretty easily if you follow these tips.
