I purchased a bedroom set from an estate sale and the inside smells like "old" clothes. Also my cupboards in my kitchen smells like "old". What can I do to eliminate this. I have tried, baking soda, I've even washed the inside many times and I just can't get the smell out. "Help".

You can try setting a bowl of vinegar inside the dresser for a few days.

i use this great product called “Vital Oxide”. Buy it online.

  • Wipe out the inside with a cloth soaked in white vinegar. Then place several lumps of charcoal in each drawer. Give it a week or two.

Baking Soda works for cupboards. Mix with water in spray bottle and wipe down inside. After, place an open box inside to absorb odor. For the dresser, kitty liter (unused). Take the drawers and place in large garbage bag and sprinkle an good amount of litter in the draw and seal the bag. Let sit a few days, the longer the better. If the whole dresser smells, and to large to fit in a garbage bag, get a plastic drop cloth and place the dresser on drop cloth. Fill drawers with the kitty litter and leave in the dresser. Wrap the drop cloth around the dresser and seal with tape like a package. Let sit, longer the better. Kitty litter will take the smell out of the dresser. Cheap, unscented kitty litter. Might have to do more than one time depending on how strong the odor is. Once odor is gone clean the dresser with a good wood cleaner and enjoy your great find. Save the litter if you drive on icy roads, can be reused if your stuck. Good luck.

Another thing to try for the cupboards. Mix peppermint oil and water and spray the inside and leave. Good smell and repels insects and mice. Dresser too.

I like the repellent idea. I don't have a problem but you never know when this might happen since I live close to a Big Field. Thank you

Try a charcoal odor absorber, you can buy online or at a big box home improvement store - may need to use it for awhile but it does work.

    Charcoal.

I've checked and Kingsford does not recommend their products for odor removal because of extra stuff used to make it burn better.

You need to find a "natural" charcoal and close a bowl or mesh bag of it in the offending spaces. Amazon offers a variety of charcoal odor eliminator packs but they seem a bit pricey compared with a bulk grill charcoal. They are more convenient though.

Pour kitty litter with baking soda in it and let it sit for a day.... then dump/vacuum. Should be much improved!
