Pool tables are made with wool felt over slate. You would need to build a sturdy base with a piece of slate slab to cover the top. Stretch the felt wrinkle free and make pockets in the wooden rails surrounding the slate.

If your looking to build a real slate table, I’d leave it to the professionals to build. This is no easy task to make a good pool table and likely to take many tries before ever making one correctly. In the long run it may be a lot cheaper and easier to keep your sanity just buying one premade!
