Hi there, I used bead board on all of my ceilings in my home (it comes in 8x4 sheets like plywood) I've also used styrofoam ceiling tiles that I just glued up in another home. Without a doubt the ceiling tiles were the very easiest way to go and, once their up, they are paintable too. Um scrape it off?!!! Seriously the old, most reliable way is to scrape and start over. If is too daunting of a project, cover with plywood or sheet rock (will lower your ceilings) and crown molding. Texture the way you want it and paint. Good luck!
