What is the best way to give ol laminate kitchen cabinets a new life?

The cabinets are from at least as far back as the 80's. They are ivory with an oak type stained frame top and bottom and same oak woodwork. Same with countertop. I've read contact paper and chalk paint. I'm looking for advice of what has worked as well as what has not (so I don't repeat errors).
Thank you.

Paint, new hardware but start with a good cleaning.

Hi Carol. I sanded mine (to give a bit of a tooth for paint to stick to) & wiped them down well. I used plain old acrylic paint and them the color I wanted. Then used polyurethane (a couple of coats). It worked and even for my counters.

Carol, I would visit my local improvement store and seek a professional on what would hold up on your counter tops. They can direct you on the proper paints and dealers to use so they will last
