After admiring this desk, a niece-in-law offered it to me because of her upcoming out of state move. Even though I suggested payment, she smiled and said she wanted to give it a good home. I promised her if she ever wanted it back, that I would gladly return it to her. When I finished the desk redo, I thought she may take me up on my offer. However, she praised my work and told me it was mine to keep. I liked her before this gracious gift, but she is now on the top of my favorite people list!icon
Original Writing Desk
This is the before picture of the writing desk. It wasn't in deplorable shape; it just needed a little cleaning and updating. Notice that the leather writing insert is missing.
1st coat of paint
After cleaning desk with wood cleaner, I took it apart, sanded and painted the desk. I applied 2 coats of Annie Sloane's Old White Chalk Paint.
Deciding on which panels to paint
I wanted to keep some of the original wood color to accent the piece, therefore, I decided to keep the drawers to show the burl pattern.
Burl wood shows on the drawers
Next, I applied a clear wax to the painted desk. I ordered a piece of leather from a local fabric store and glued brown leather to the top of the desk. Since the desk top was the most neglected area, the new leather insert was a great improvement. I thought about adding an outer trim to the panel, but then decided that I liked it clean and simple.
Placing this writing desk in our living room added a distinct charm and style. I am very pleased with the outcome. I always love breathing new life in an vintage piece of furniture.
