Who do I hire to update bathrooms?

That's a good question. You may luck out and get a handyman that knows how to put these things in, but a contractor will typically have a crew to do tile, countertops, sinks, etc. Check with neighbors or others you know and see if they've recently had this type of work done. Make sure they are bonded to do work and if the work involves moving pipes or electrical work, make sure permits are pulled for your house. Do all your homework and you'll be more pleased with the work. Oh, and whoever you hire, if they say 4 weeks, plan on 6-8. Been there, done that. Good luck.

You can hire someone to do the job and they will contract out if needed.

First I would go to HomeAdvisor.com or Angieslist.com and consult with a verified bathroom remodeling company or contractor.... they can give you suggestions and ideas on configuration and THEY will have sub-contractors who can do plumbing, electrical, tile, etc... so you do not have to find good ones... all you need to do is shop for the finishes you like... I would suggest that you do some research... go to HGTV.com or DIYnetwork.com or Pinterest.com and find the looks that you like.... print them out.. so the contractor has good information from YOU... on what look YOU are going for.

If a friend has used this handy man and he meets all the requirements previously stated then it's probably cheaper,but if not you need both. The thing to remember with countertop and sink is it one piece, two piece. Is the sink undermount or drop in,you need this so countertop can be either made in one piece as in first one and to your specifications the other kind you need to basically have sink there because they come with a template that is used to cut hole out.

Usually a general contractor should be able to do all of the work required in a bathroom including the plumbing. Ask for references.

Hubby and I have been upgrading things in our bathroom ourselves. So far, we have change the sink, faucet, vanity top and vanity, the toilet and the shower hardware. The only thing we didn't do ourselves was replace the tub hardware, the access is in our hall closet and only maybe eighteen inches across, so we had a plumber friend replace that and he found a couple of pipes that needed replacing, which he did for us. As long as you are not changing the vanity, just the counter top and the sinks, you could probably do it yourself. Hubby will be 73 this year and had no problem, even with his physical disabilities. Next we will be doing the floor, thinking about doing vinyl plank. If you are not doing tiling or anything, a decent handyman who will guarantee his work will probably be good, why pay for a contractor to do such simple work. If you have friends or kids or even grandkids that are willing to help for some home cooked meals and a little cash that would probably work too.

A general contractor takes care of all phases of construction getting other contractors hired for each job or uses men in his company that are skilled in their trades. this is usually easier/better because you only have one person to deal with instead of someone for each trade. just make sure who ever you end up with they are Licensed,Bonded and reputable(been in business long time). Many plumbers may not even install the sinks,vanities they will only take care of plumbing-the toilets & pipe work. You probably can get good local handyman just make sure they are Licensed Bonded in case they break anything or install wrong you have some recourse.Go on/join local sites for references Nextdoor.com is free site neighborhood based so you could ask people in your area whom they have used, low cost,recommend, have had great results with.I don't think you need a General contractor for this job/ for what you want done & it will cost more to hire one putting that $ towards better plumber & handyman would be best.But you will have to oversee the people you hire don't be afraid to watch them,see what they are doing and make sure it's what you want done, not them just doing it for sake of getting it done/cutting corners/talking you out of something or trying to change your mind,not cleaning up after. if you don't want to do all this hire a General contractor.
