Veggie gardening, flower gardens, formal gardens? Gardens to solve a certain issue? Please look up your gardening zone...so someone in your growing zone can give you pertinent advise. I’m a zone 5 location. Some of my seeds get started mid March, or so.

For shady areas, hostas are almost no care once established, and they really fill in as the growing seasons go by. Once they have filled in nicely after a few years, the rain we get is pretty much all the water they get, but that is in my area, probably not yours. Most plants don't like to be planted until the ground is at least a little warm. If you have a neighbor that likes to garden, they could probably help you with what you will like and take you under their wing to teach you how to plant and care for your plants.

bulbs would be your best bet!! just keep em weeded (do not SPRAY) and let the GREEN (leaves) die back naturally (it feeds the bulbs for next years blooms!) otherwise you need not do ANYTHING - Daylilies, daffodils,- other lilies (tiger, Asiatic, Oriental, etc.) and "spider" lilies (google it) these will give you blooms from early spring to mid summer...
