Adding pull chain light- just a clarification

by Steve
I would like to add a pull chain light, and the closet electrical source is a 3 way switch. If I attach the black wire to the common terminal and the white to the pass thru white connection, it should work. I don't want light to be controlled by 3 way switch, just pull chain. How can I be sure that the common and the white are going to source or as long as its live it does not matter if it is at top of stairs or bottom. There shouldn't be a live source at both ends.
All opinions appreciated.
Thanks
Steve

Hi Daisy, the easiest way to avoid the three way switch is to bypass it completely by removing it. Take off faceplate, unscrew switch, remove wires from switch, using wire nuts put the black wires together, the white wires together and then the grounds together. Then use a blank face plate to cover the junction box. As always make sure you turn the breaker off before doing any kind of work on electrical wires.

I guess I wasn't clear. I don't want to remove the 3 way set up. I want to tap into the live feed to create another circuit, separate from the 3 way set-up. Sorry for the confusion.

When it comes to doing electrical work in your own house, you have to know exactly what doing with no confusion. It can lead to injury or loss of property. Before you start get a tester from the HD there cheap.
