Rope lights to provide down light lighting

I have several gallery walls with large ornate frames and rather dark old fashioned paintings. I would like to use rope lights round the top of the walls to produce downlights to illuminate the paintings. I'm not quite sure how to go about this.

Rope lighting gives 360 degree lighting, so installing it in a hood or valance would work but I would check with a LED lighting specialist or look for a LED store.
