It was only 55 Deg. out yesterday and I saw a Garden/Garder snake on our patio. Normally they only come out when the temp. reaches above 70 Deg. out. Is it looking for food or shelter or both?

it may have been displaced by construction, higher water levels.

There has been no construction and no high water levels. Just some light snow.

  • Chances are looking for a sunny warm spot. They are great for the garden and totally harmless. Just keep your screen doors latched so they do not end up inside your house.

Honeybees, snakes, seeds, all come awake when the temp hits 54 degrees. Water in a well is 54 degrees. Am I the only one who thinks 54 degrees is more than a coincidence?

    That’s one confused snake.

Snakes are cold-blooded creatures which means they must be warmed by external means (a warm sidewalk.) Humans have an internal warmer which is why we are warm-blooded creatures. Snakes love your warm patio. I welcome 58 degrees as a warm spell, especially right now waiting for spring. 58 degrees is a blessed relief from below 32 degrees Fahrenheit. I would curl up on your warm patio is complete heaven...if I were a snake. :-)
