Split rail is likely the least expensive. It's not the technique that costs when building a fence, it's the materials.
  • What type of fence? Do you need to keep children or pets in? Or purely a decorative fence?

You can use pallets to build a fence - lots of places just throw them out or give them away free.

WE found it necessary to fence in our yard on the side because the house next door was for a while rental property and since the back of their property is next to the side of ours, the trash etc. they collected was the primary view we had! My husband built the fencing which is about 6 feet high and is board. Later on he painted the mural. The fence has stringers attached to the fence posts and then board nailed to the stringers. The hard part is putting in the fence posts, the rest is relatively simple for a carpenter type person.

Digging them on our property is a horse of a different color! Ever hear of the rock bound coast of Maine? On t.v. I see those big mechanical borer things; that would make it a piece of cake, but we always do things on a budget!

Check for city and county codes. You may have to offset the property line by 0-3’, or use only certain materials. Even rural counties are getting codified now. ☺️

There is always the kind of fencing you see farmers use--the metal posts with wire fencing. A family member uses it to keep his small livestock penned.

If you want to block out an unattractive view, you can grow vines on it, too.
