How are you wanting to refinish the paneled walls? If you want to paint and don't mind the lines in the paneling, you can just paint them as is. If you don't want the lines, fill them with wood putty or something to build them up to the wood part.

Most paneling can be sanded, primed and painted... you only need to cover over it if it is the really cheap stuff that won't hold the paint (paint peels right off).... if you have to dry wall... then you might as well remove the paneling.

I painted mine and have been very pleased. They look much better than I anticipated. Use a good primer before paint.

I also painted mine. I have seen where you can use putty or dry wall cement to fill the lines in if you want to. I didn't fill mine and love it

You can paint them! We painted ours! They looked great when we finished. First we calked all the cracks. Then we used aroma free Kilz primer paint on them. Then we painted them whatever we wanted! It is not hard. It just takes a little time to prepare them. It really lightened up the rooms!
