A Great Grate Camouflage

Every day, at least a dozen times a day, I have to pass the intake vent for my HVAC system...it is sooooo ugly! I tried painting it the same color as the wall but all that did was make ugly a nice color.
I had seen a wooden cut out wall décor at HOME GOODS that size wise, might work; but just didn't want to spend the money. When I looked closely at the wall décor, a lite bulb went off, and this is what happened next:
I gathered my materials
and got to it!
First, I painted over the canvas with black paint. ( this painting was the disappointing result of a "sip n paint" nite with the ladies - it is possible I had too much wine).
Then I cut some scrapbooking paper into 3"x3" squares
and after laying them out for spacing and visual appeal, I modge podged them to the front of the canvas to give the look of tile. Finishing with a topcoat of modge podge. When that was completely dry
using the KEY stencil, I added acrylic seafoam paint.
When that was dry, I flipped the canvas over and on the back of the canvas with a pencil I traced a fleur de lis pattern which I then cut out using my fiskars exacto cutter.
This took a bit of time, and patience; but the end result was worth it. Because when all the shapes were cut away, and I flipped the canvas over...
Do you see the ugly intake grate? I don't! And there is plenty of openness to allow for free flow of air.
This is my stencil project!
Happy crafting everyone

Beautiful!.. I'm wondering how you have it hanging away from the wall.
I live in a mobile home and all my vents and return are in the floor. Any ideas what I can do for that?
Why that extra black area strip
