How to paint Knotty Pine paneling from the 1950's

I live in my parents house built in 1953. The paneling has been cleaned over the years with Old Glory or Liquid Gold, Lemon Oil or Old English and even Johnson Paste Wax. I want to lighten the room by painting over it but I've been told that paint will not adhere to wood because of the oil built up from years of cleaning. Any ideas on flooring for this room. It consists of kitchen, breakfast area, and den. Thanks for any help. Cricket

You can sand your paneling or wash with a deglosser before priming and painting. I would probably sand it just to make sure all of the petroleum products are gone.

Use a degreaser and deglosser product to remove any residue of previous products. Follow the instructions on the container. Use a good primer such as Zinsser Bullseye 1-2-3 primer which can be tinted to your finish color. Then put your final coat on top.

Scrub the walls down with a mixture of TSP (Tri-Sodium Phosphate, found at most paint/hardware stores) and hot water, sand the walls down, prime in oil primer, then use any latex paint. It will totally transform the room.
