What permits do you need to replace a front porch?

Mine is falling apart and would like to replace it with a larger sitting area.

    Each area has slightly different codes in place, you will need to call either the county extension office or the couthouse

    The local county or city building department issues permits. They will tell you what is required. Generally they need a set of plans, a plot plan and a check. Decks over certain heights may require engineering.

    Many towns have a prescribed set-back for structures. You must know exactly what your town allows before you enlarge the porch. Encroach on the set-back zone, and they can make you take your new porch down.

    Building codes change over time. Even if you had wanted to to a simple replacement of the existing porch, and not an expansion, you should first check with what the present compliance requirements are in your geographical area.
