Having finished this labor intensive project last year I can honestly say that cleaning, sanding and a top quality paint are vital for a good outcome. If your cabinets are genuine wood, invest in an orbital hand sander with fine grit sandpaper, remove all hardware and gently sand the surface after first cleaning with TSP solution (Amazon has it). I used Sherwin Williams base coat in flat white using paint rollers and put two coats with drying time in between (usually just 24 hours). After it dried thoroughly I went over each door and the frame of the cabinets with semi-gloss Sherwin Williams paint in my color choice also with paint roller and touch ups with a fine slim paint brush. Allow for drying time and go over it again for durability. Allow several days for the paint to 'cure' before rehanging the hinges & doors.

The FIRST time I used Behr and in less than a year we had chips and was upset at all the hard work for a poor outcome. Benjamin Moore and Sherwin Williams paint is worth the investment for the better outcome.

The most important step is cleaning. Cabine doors, frames build up a gross greasy film. It may not look or feel it’s there but it is. Open all doors of cabinets. It’s there too. Remove all hardware.. pulls etc.

clean with your favorite cleaner..then wipe down with alcohol. Use fine grade sandpaper. Wipe down again with tacky clothe..that’s the material available at paint department .. just ask.. it will feel sticky.

now your ready to paint. If possible take doors/drawers off and set them on anything that keeps then off the newspaper you have put down. By setting them raised, they won’t stick to the paper. It will be easier to turn them over for painting the over side.

if you are painting in place.. be sure to open drawers/doors enough so you can paint all edges.

be sure to catch any new paint drips on the edges by running your empty brush over drips. Think of it like licking an ice cream cone!

Make sure you mark where each cabinet door and drawer goes...they aren't interchangeable and you will have trouble re-hanging the doors straight if you don't. The other answers have you covered for everything else!
