What can I plant? I live on a 2nd floor apartment...

I suggest having drain holes made with drill or make them into water garden with water lilies

If you add holes to your planters for drainage put a saucer under them to catch the water. Also look for plants that like full sun if you balcony doesn't have any shade. If your planters are ceramic and you are not comfortable drilling drain holes you can use a clay pot with a drain hole inside of ceramic planters, but you will need to empty out any accumulated water from rain and waterings.

The plants need rain water, but they also need to drain. Do as Linda told you, also another way I do it is to put a layer of pebbles in the bottom of your planters, then keep the plants in the plastic pots you buy them in and set them down in the planters. Let them get the rain water (it's much better for them than out of the faucet), if you have too much rain, pour the excess out so the roots won't drown. I hope this also helps!

I think it would be worth it for you to drill holes into your planters to allow for some drainage. Most plants appreciate and thrive with good drainage.

You can't drill holes when you live ON THE SECOND FLOOR, poor drainage is why the don t grow!

There are not many plants that like having soggy roots. If you cannot let your planters drain then perhaps you could use taller planters and put something in the bottom (like half a brick) that would support and hide a more practical draining pot inside. You would to need to empty the water that catches in the bottom pot, but your plants would do better.

Some house plants that don't mind being in very moist soil are: lucky bamboo, maidenhair fern, and split leaf philodendron. You can bring your investment inside if you have winter weather where you live.
