Japanese maple damage from ice rain. Can we repair it?

    Hello Darlene. I have had a huge maple tree damaged from a lighting storm. You can put metal rods in the tree to pull the damage together and hope that it heals itself. I would also make sure you keep the ants away. Trees are amazing and can heal. Mine did heal itself. Good Luck!

  • I think you can, Japanese Maples are pretty hardy. I would call in an arborist or tree surgeon for a consult as how to proceed.

    I was able to recover 2 camelia trees that split in the middle from weight of snow storm. I pruned off as much weight as I could leaving enough smaller branches to promote regrowth. Pruning the terminal points of branches will stimulate the lateral buds to fill in with new growth.

    If that one branch with the light slash in it is split, I think I would have it removed and have the tree shaped by an arborist.
