  • Vinegar! Think about improving the ventilation in the room. Even portable fans will help until you can install a better system.

First you need to fix whatever is causing the moisture that caused the mold and mildew. If it is just because the basement is really humid, which it shouldn't be in the winter with the furnace on all the time. A dehumidifier will help, but there has to be moisture coming in somewhere. Give everything a good bleach water bath to start getting rid of some of the stain and the actual mold and mildew. Let that dry. Spray everywhere the mold and mildew is with straight vinegar, including some surrounding area. This will kill the mold and mildew spores that are present and also any bacteria that may be around from the moisture. I hope this helps you some. Try to get rid of the moisture wherever it is coming from.

Mold can be cleaned off by washing walls with bleach. Although, you have to have a heavy mask on. It will get to you if not ventilated by window. Or get it taken care of by a professional.
