The only way is to completely cover the space in asphalt or concrete...other than that, you will always have to contend with weeds
Salt is most effective
Salt works well if you don't want anything for a very long time, but after you put down the salt, cover the area with black plastic - plants need the sun to grow so anything there will die with the combination of salt and dark.
Hit them with a solarization treatment- cover them with a lawn fabric and let the sun heat them up and burn them out for a couple of weeks
