The best idea being it is a rental is to use removable contact paper

Try using a easy peel off shelf liner, the rolls are wide enough & should be long enough also. Wide variety to chose from. Just remember no hot pots or pans on them. Use trivets.

How about contact paper? It comes in so many colors and prints there is probably something they would like, and it is easy to take off. No hot pots on contact paper.

I do not think there is anything you can do temporarily that’s functions for them but is easily removable by owner. I posted something similar recently on FB that says was a $250 upgrade for cheap counter tops that involved epoxy. If you do something permanent that the home owners like but not a huge investment that’s the best way to go. https://www.countertopepoxy.com/

I thought about that. Is there a second layer of a sealer adhesive paper that might withstand usual counter top activity?
