Where are your plants in your yard? Wonder if you could make some sort of frame onto which you could drape a drop cloth or other fabric. You could paint a design on the fabric first.
a canopy or maybe a pergola type cover with canvas or painter cloth that can be opened and shut as needed
If these plants are on a patio of sorts you could make a frame on rollers.
Shade sails look nice and you can position them wherever you need them. You just need to mount the hardware to sturdy things.
