Why not fix brackets to wall either side and shelves. (Square or Half round etc.) You could also put up brackets and a shelf right across bed too........( You can get all sorts of designs in brackets and shelves these days..............

Could you use floating shelves

Yes, shelves going up the wall would work. You could make them extra elegant by adding corbels underneath them. Also, to save space on the shelves you could make a little caddy for books, your glasses and other small items that slips between your mattress and boxspring and hangs down, much like an armchair caddy for your couch.

As far as the tables go, a phone table on both sides would be around 12-15 inches. They usually have a shelf underneath it that would provide you the space for books. A shelf above the headboard would provide additional space.

I have used a variety of things for night tables. In our guest room I used a old fashioned metal typewriting table and made a skirt for it. For my own room one time I had a round circle of wood on a rectangle of wood and skirted that too. When my daughter was young we used a tree trunk painted pink. Right now I have one of those Victorian wooden rotating book cases (this too big for your project.) in guest room very narrow space, a small Victorian stand. In a room for a small girl I used a play cupboard. In other words don't think "traditional night stand" think what fits your needs and your space.
