I have COPD, and all the suggestions above work GREAT!!! I use all of these. And Dawn, peroxide, and water makes a great stain remover. The vinegar smell goes away when it's dry. I use the white vinegar to mop my laminate floors too. (diluted of course) You can also make a great citrus cleaner with vodka and orange peels.

I Clean for a Living my father has COPD, and another woman I clean for is highly allergic to everything. I use Dawn Dish Soap. I use it for everything for this two people, I use a spritz of water on a dry cloth to dust. It also helps keep the dust down. To mop I use a couple of drops of dawn dish soap in a bucket of water I mop and dry the floors. I am careful about any smells because it takes their breath away. I use a special vaccum cleaner filter to keep dust at a minium. The one women I clean for has me use comet to clean her toilets. For my father I use regular cleaner. The smell doesn't seem to bother him. I found baking soda, comet, etches the toilets. Dish soap is a natural cleaner it will also kill germs and it requires no fancy recipes.
  • Everyone who suffers from COPD has different triggering issues so what may work with one person may not work with others. There are dusting cloths that already have cleaning chemicals already in them so spraying surfaces will not become an issue. I would suggest with any product that uses chemicals that are sprayed into the air and onto the furniture or floor that you use a N-95 charcoal impregnated dust mask. These can be purchased at most home centers and paint stores. The mask will prevent breathing of most dust that is disturbed in the air, and the charcoal will absorb the chemicals and odors that result in the spraying. If you have not already purchased on, I would also suggest that you obtain a true HEPA vacuum or have a central vacuum system installed into the house with the discharge going outside of the home. Using the vacuum can create all sorts of breathing issues even with those that have no real health issues to start off with. If your looking at free standing vacuums a true HEPA is not one of those that you see normally advertised on TV, these vacuums are expensive and use special filtering methods to remove 99.% or better of the dust that the machine picks up. Because of the price and your health, check with your DR about getting prescribed the use of one so it becomes a Medical necessity and tax deductible.
